Excel 2003 Autocorrect Options problem

Laura Trassell

Hi--

I just got a new computer at work with Excel 2003 on it. Whenever I try to
choose "Tools/AutoCorrect Options" the Basic File Seach Task Pane opens up
instead of the AutoCorrect Options Box.

I was curious if anyone else was seeing this behavior. I can get into the
AutoCorrect Options Dialog box through Word, but not through Excel.

I'm willing to try re-installing XL2003, but don't want to hassle with it,
if others are having the same problem.

Thanks!

Laura :)

No problems here, try to repair it under help>detect and repair (keep the cd
handy if asked for)

Peo--

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even know this option existed in the
newer versions of Office!

Unfortunately, I tried it and my problem with the "Basic File Search" Task
Pane opening instead of the Auto Correct Options dialog box when I choose
Tools/Auto Correct Options still exists.

When I have some time on my hands, I will try to re-install Excel to see if
this clears up the problem. For now, I can simply open Word to make my
changes in the Auto Correct dialog box.

Update--

Re-installing didn't help--the "Basic File Search" Task Pane still opens
when I choose Tools/AutoCorect Options.

But I discovered that I can get to the Autocorrect options within Excel by
choosing Tools/Options/Spelling and clicking on the AutoCorrect Options
button there.

I find this behavior very odd--especially since Peo said that his Excel 2003
doesn't do this. I would be very interested if anyone else sees this.

(I am running Office Basic 2003 on a new system from Dell.)

I think I'd try this (but I'm not too confident).

Tools|options|customize|toolbars tab|
click on the worksheet menu bar and then click the reset button.

If you can't get to that dialog either, maybe you could try this instead:

close excel
use windows start button|find|
search for *.xlb (look in hidden folders for hidden files)

Rename any you find to *.xlbOLD and start up excel to test.

If it worked, then dump all those *.xlbOLD files. You'll have to rebuild any
customizations to your toolbars, though.

If it didn't, just rename them back to *.xlb.

Dave--

I'll try your suggestions when I get to work in the morning. (I think I
already tried resetting, but I'm not sure and it won't hurt to try again!)

If that doesn't work, I'll try renaming my xlb files. Since this is a new
computer, I haven't really messed with my toolbars yet, so don't have to
worry about losing any customizations.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Dave--

Thanks--renaming the *.xlb file and allowing Excel to rebuild my menus
worked!

In fact, the items on my Tools menu are now in a different order.

I'm not sure, but this is what I think happened...Even though I have a brand
new computer with Excel 2003 on it, the IT guys at work copied over the
contents of my old computer's C drive into a temporary folder on my new
computer for me to look through and save any files I needed.

On my old computer, I was running Excel 2000, and somehow Excel 2003 must
have found the toolbar file from my old version of Excel. (This very well
could have happened when I opened up my old Personal.xls file to transfer
some macros to the new version of Excel.) Anyway this is all speculation,
just happy to have Excel acting normally again.

Sounds like a reasonable analysis.

Another good reason not to copy over the toolbar from previous versions is that
you may never notice what's been added to make your life easier.
