Recently I was given access to a company laptop with Office 2000 on it to do
catch up work. I upgraded the office copy on that laptop to Office 2007,
then when I was caught up I uninstalled Office 2007, ran a registry cleaner,
then re-installed Office 2000.

Now, when I open excel it gives me: "This file is not in a recognizable
format." if I hit OK to procede it then opens up a file that appears to be
gibberish with the filename: personal.xlsb

How do I fix this?

Close Excel
Go to
C:\Documents
and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart folder
after replacing user name with your user name
delete personal.xlsb

If it is not there then search for the file and delete it.

Thank you Very Much!

That fixed it!
