I used the *.rar version w/o the installer.
In W98SE, running the executable, I get the message "Menu Index out of range" ?

Dunno, used the no-install, works fine, but I'm on win2k.
FWIW, it's small and nice, and no-install, but I'm sticking with Billy.
Also no-install, uses less memory than Evil Player, and has the
possibility to queue songs.

On another question by you, I still can't remember that no-install
download manager I used last year, I hate that.

Thanks, Azzman. I will look up wget, and try billy.

BTW, my tech who some year is building my new computer, pushes W2000, but from
what I understand, it has most of the XP issues, and W98SE is the devil I know,
very stable for me.

FWIW, I switched from win98SE to win2k late 2004. I had been very happy
with 98se for years, but I'll never go back. For me win2k has been (fingers
crossed) 100% stable, and feels more 'mature' in general, without the XP-
bling. Hardware recognition and USB-support come to mind.

Billy is nice, I saved it. But in my Music folder, I will settle on my old
favorite, Chime Tray Play. It plays MP3, WAV, Midi, all my music files, nice GUI,
to my old ears, sounds good. The link is old. It is a small (37 KB) executable.
---------------
Chime Tray Play plays all
Version: 1.0.0 (Final) ChimeTrayPlay.exe 37kb executable 3.8 MB RAM
2002
Chime Software
Visual Basic 6
http://www.chime.tv/products/trayplay.shtml
+ Tray Play is a very small, fast and efficient audio player which can play the
following types of files:
+ Audio CD's (cda)
+ Midi (mid, midi, rmi)
+ Wave Audio (wav)
+ Mpeg Audio (mp1, mp2, mp3)
+ Windows Media Audio (wma)
+ You don't need to bother about creating playlists or loading files. Just
click on a folder, the files are listed, then click on a file and Tray Play will
automatically hide, play that file and then (optional) continue to serially /
randomly play any other files in the same folder.

If you see this, back in this old thread, now I am also going to move to W2K/SP4 next
month when my new computer is ready. I hope to keep W98SE going on my old computer,
but can't get a computer built that will be reliable with W98SE anymore, so have to
go to W2K. Understand it is stable, as you say, may be a learning curve for me.

Do most of the utilities mentioned here that run in W98SE work ok in W2K?

2k is quite a lot more stable, its downsides are that it keeps mind
boggling amounts of data about you, along with the usual rate of
errors, and 98 is simply the one OS with by far the most software
available for it. Personally I dont like spyware, especially when it
logs everything I did since age 2 - which wouldnt worry me too much but
for the errors this kinda info inevitably contains, which doesnt promte
confidence, and the unfortunate reality that some people can and do
conclude that 2+2=37 + 103j, plus I just dont really feel a desire to
spy on myself and keep it all there for any hacker to download. So why
choose to.

2k is definitely better than xp tho.

I found this site and thought you might be interested (re W2000).

Many thanks, Helen. That's exactly what I need. Just starting out in W2K, I have to
learn all the customizing tricks I had to learn to convert W98SE from the default
garbage to a nice OS.

BTW, do you also find W2K (SP4?) to be more stable than W98SE? When it is working
well, for me W98SE was rock solid.

Thanks, very interesting.

Can you please explain that? I won't be able to run it for a month, so just learning
about it.

I have no problems with W2K... it takes longer to boot up though. I can't
really complain about W98SE either. I didn't really have that many problems
with it. Actually, come to think of it, it wasn't so much the OS's as it was the
programs (media player, real ...uuggg...live and learn!) going through their
"UPdates" and/or requiring a subscription, or this or that.

I purchased the old computer from a Goodwill for less than $200 (monitor, mouse,
keyboard, etc)...it had W2K (I upgraded it to SP4 and deleted the games and other
junk), Word Perfect 10 and a few other programs along with 256MB memory. It is
rock solid. I have added IrfanView, AVG and a few other freebies. I was going to
use it for a server but haven't got around to it yet. Also, I use W2K at work and it
runs when XP peoples' computers are hiccuping. I've had it running for about a
year now and haven't had a single problem with it. I do want to increase the
memory though.
