Looks like a pretty good deal .. Mwave, NewEgg, TigerDirect
has it for $270 with $20 mailin rebate. Does anybody know
the TRUTH about this card, or is this another nVidia dump
on the market to bust ATI ? 20 pipes sounds like this
thing is the way to go. Only complaints I read was that
the card is power hungry ... and NewEgg states right up
front that a minimum of 450 watt supply is required. I have
a TruePower 480 watt, and I'm very tempted ... but the
nVidia reviewers have been lying their fannies off about
these cards, and now there's a 7800GT headed down
to the $200 bracket. Is this for real ? No gimmicks?
I hope it drives the 6800s off the market. They are
garbage.

I have one of these, is 30% faster than 6800GT. Is slower than 7800GTX,
but is a LOT cheaper, best bang for your buck! I have 420W PSU, it runs
fine.

i just bought evga 7800GT CO (higher clock: 470/1050) and im very satisfied.
i did not benchmark it yet, but it seams to run VERY FAST.
benchmarks on the net say that its almost GTX.

i also did not encounter one of these rumors i read about it:

- very loud heatsink-fan: okay, its not the most quiet fan ive ever
heard. you can hear him and on reboot it runs like a turbine, but after
3 seconds it gehts almost quiet. i think thinks can be more silent but
its very good.

- "buzzing noises" from the GPU. nothing heard. very few people complain
buzzing noises from the card while gaming. i did not hear anything.

the card sits on aDFI LanParty UT Ultra-D with Athlon 64 4000+
NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM!

Have you tried it in Far Cry? That game is a true test of
nVidia compatibility. The level to look at is Bunker. See
if the walls and ceilings go black or do they hold. Try the
highest settings to test rendering, and see if AA at 4x
works. Benchmarks are not a good test of nVidia because
the card drivers know about the benchmarks, and have
workarounds to max scores. My 9800 has no problems
with the Bunker level. The walls and ceilings look supurb
with extreme detail, and a broad range of color ... FPS
stays in high 40s and 50s in this level. nVidia cards go
in the dirt in the Bunker level on Very High settings.

i dont own far cry because i live in germany and far cry is censored
here (no rag doll) and im unwillingly to buy an incomplete game.
maybe i'll import it from play.com one day as i did it with unreal
tournament 2004.

does this level do exist in the demo? if yes ill check this.

yeah, i know about the benchmark optimizations, but still it should
usuable to compare at least two cards of the same chipset brand, since
both use the same cheats ;)

my 3dmark05 bench is ~7650 which is a good result for a 7800GT, since in
many benchmarks in the net the 7800GTX hardly get these results.

things are funny.

my last but one videocard was a geforce 4 mx with no problems at all,
but its performance...

my last videocard was a Sapphire ATI 9600XT and when i bought it the
drivers let it crash every few minutes, except i lowered the AGP-Speed
and some other values, some months later they got it fixed. but ppl
still kept telling me ATI's drivers were crap in comparison to nvidia.

this time i bought nvidia again, because it seemed to be more bang for
the cash (the evga 7800GT CO is manufacturer-overclocked to 570/1010 and
is 43-48°C on load AND beats a non-oc'ed 7800GTX) and the
heatsinks/clockrates were smaller for ~same performance (which indicates
better technology for me. just like amd>intel. and just like ATI>nvidia
as i bought the 9600XT). and again ppl telling me that the cards drivers
are worse than its counterpart :)

ill check the bunker-level asap since im curious about it. :)
