I've been getting some serious errors with Windows XP (sp1) when I use MS
Excel. The screen freezes and looks blocky. The only recovery is to reboot.
Below is the full error message.

I have not been able to figure out what's causing this. I tried totally
re-installing MS Office, just in case there was a corrupt file there. No
luck. I tried rolling back the nVidia video card driver to the last stable
version (40.72) without any success.

Any ideas? Thanks.

What version of DirectX is installed? Excel is notorious for
display-related crashes. These can be corrected by not invoking zoomed
spreadsheet views - not related to DirectX AFIK. Sometimes it helps to
run the video acceleration down one or two notches and 16-bit color.

If the problem persists in other applications, then you might need to
update DirectX.

This is definitely a problem in either the graphics driver or the graphics
subsystem that needs to be debugged further.
Your return E-mail is not valid, so I don't know how to get more information
from you.

Thanks. To reply via email, just take the NOT(s) out of the email address

Whoops! My bad. I'd left out a digit in the correct email address.
