Event Log entries disappearing

I am having trouble with a Windows 2000 Standard server.
The event log seems to have become corrupted. I am unable
to view any application event log entries. The only thing
I can see are small generic windows file icons where
entries are normally listed.

I any one has seen this or can recommend a fix that would
be great. I can also provide a screen shot that option
was not available at this time but I can email one if
necessary.

The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Then; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event
Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;
