Event log does not display systemlog events

When I open Event viewer on the Windows 2000 DC and
highlight the system log in the left pane, nothing
displays in the right pane. But just above the right pane
it says the system log has 2111 events.
Sometimes the system events will show up, but if I click
off the system log and highlight application logs, the
highlighted one shows 0 events and no displays. Then if I
go back to system again, it shows 0 events (instead of the
2111 it previously showed) and no displays.
When I go to the config folder in system32, the
sysevent.Evt has 512 bytes as its size.

Can someone please help me with this. I depend on the
event log for troubleshooting.

Thanks,
jean

I have figured out that the problem was the event log was too large. When I
saved it to a file and cleared it, then I could read the new event log as
well as the others that were not opening. So if this happens to you save
the log to file, then clear the log. Also set the maximum size of the file
and to overwite as needed. Also maybe turn on some filtering.
