Event ID 1517 slow log off

OK, I've run into this annoyance before but it just recently started
happening again since my last Windows Update (which seemed fairly innocuous,
updated the "Buy Music" link or something).
Most of the recommendations I see are to get the user profile hive cleanup
service (UPHClean). I have this installed and its still incapable of
unloading the registry cleanly at log off. Uphlean wil show that it has
closed the offending app, which turns out to be lsass.exe, and I understand
exactly what lsass.exe is, yet still the userenv error id 1517 still shows
up.
Man, this pisses me off, I could put my fist through my computer screen,
giving me a migraine.
There should be a reliable way to fix this.

Try resetting all XP services back to default. I went through the same
thing with one of my XP Pro machines, UPHClean reported lsass as the
culprit. In limited testing resetting the services seems to have solved the
problem.

You can obtain a reg file with the default services settings here:

Once reset were you able to customize your services once again? I mean if
the solution to my log off problems is to bog my system down with unneeded
services, then that's not really a worthwhile tradeoff.

whoa, that worked :)
I don't suppose you've figured out the real culprit, or perhaps the
combination of service changes that may result in this. I've knocked a
couple back to manual (ALG, ICF etc...) without the 1517 recurring.
I'd sort of like to know what it is.

Excellent.

No, I haven't had time to go through them yet. It's on the to-do list. ;-)

If you hit on it I'd appreciate a post back.

How did you come upon that restore services idea? At various times when
this issue cropped up I'd googled and googled finding about 100
different causes and "solutions" to this issue, none that worked for
me. The only solution that had worked before was doing a restore to a
point that I was pretty sure was free from these hive unloading
problems, that wasn't satisfactory.

Anyways, muchas gracias.

I went through the same thing. One difference I noted between the machines
that didn't have the 1517 problem and the one that did was that I'd tweaked
the services on that one. Just for the heck of it I tried resetting them
back to default and so far that seems to have eliminated the problem. It's
only been a couple of weeks though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that
the issue doesn't resurface.

Anyways, muchas gracias.

De nada.

Well I did something to regenerate the problem. Unfortunately I wasn't
keeping track of what I was un-automatic-ing.
So I'll post a list of services I've set to manual or disabled since
resetting them to default (again with the reg files found here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/registry.htm) that *do not* result in me
getting a slow log-off accompanied by Even ID 1517, unable to save
classes registry hive etc...
(sort of for anyone else who happens to google usenet looking for an
answer).
