Without knowing what has been recommended in the past, here
are a couple of suggestions. First you can modify that Registry so
that tasks that do not gracefully close can be terminated by XP.
The key name is AutoEndTasks which will need a value of 1.
Associated with that is a timeout value, WaitToKillAppTimeout.
Also, Microsoft has an add-on process called UserProfile Hive
Cleanup that can assist with shut-down issues.
However, you probably have an application or hardware driver
that is at the root of this issue. Have you updated the Chipset
driver package for your PC ? You may also have some issues
with BIOS compliancy with ACPI.
The Registry location for those Keys/Values is found at:
HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Desktop
