evaluating power of powers and reciprocals

I have just startred OU S151 Maths for Science and on either of my two
calculators ie Csaio fx-81 and TI 30XA,

I cannot seem to be able to work out the correct keying for resolving
things like 2 to the power minus two

When I key the recip key I get 50.0. It should give 0.25 as the
reciprocal of 2 to power minus two is one over two

squared which is a quarter or 0.25.

Where am I going astray?

First, by posting a question about a calculator in a newsgroup for
help and support for Windows XP... Try the forum for your brand of
calculator perhaps.
