My Motorola SB5100 cable modem has either USB or Ethernet as does my
computer. Is anyone of these connections more efficient to utilize ?

I would go with ethernet.

Ethernet is more of a "standard" in this field and may give you more options
later on if you choose to expand.

Ethernet -- Since it will use less resources and using Ethernet you can connect it to a
Cable/DSL Router. Since these devices have NAT functionality which provides simplistic
FireWall capability and some Cable/DSL Routers have full FireWall capability.

If the computer has USB v1.x and not USB v2.0, completely forget the idea since it would
saturate the USB bus.

I'd use ethernet over USB for the simple reason that you can only use
ethernet for networking. Save your USB ports for other uses.

Either should work. Both will not slow down since the modem is not using
more than 10Mbps. Howerver, Ethernet is way better since you can add a
router and share with other PCs after.
