ESENT problems

Having some major problems here...
A couple of weeks ago, Window starting freezing up randomly. At first,
it was once every couple of days or so - figured it was overheating
and I'd work on it this weekend.
As of this weekend, it's been freezing once every hour or two. I've
been checking the event logs, and every freeze is preceeded by the
following messages:

ESENT : wuaueng.dll (2380) SUS20ClientDataStore: The database engine
stopped the instance (0).
ESENT : wuauclt (2380) The database engine stopped.

Now, sometimes these are the ONLY two recent messages. At other times,
these are immediately preceeded by the following chain of events:

ccSetMgr : Application starting
ccSetMgr : Application started
GhostStartService : The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source (
GhostStartService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have
the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the
/AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support
for details. The following information is part of the event: Service
started.
NProtectService : The service was started.
Task Manager Lite : The description for Event ID ( 105 ) in Source (
Task Manager Lite ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have
the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the
/AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support
for details. The following information is part of the event: The event
log file is corrupt..
ccEvtMgr : Application starting
ccEvtMgr : Application started
SecurityCenter : The Windows Security Center Service has started.
ESENT : wuauclt (1680) The database engine 5.01.2600.2180 started.
ESENT : wuaueng.dll (1680) SUS20ClientDataStore: The database engine
started a new instance (0).

And then, IMMEDIATELY afterwards, I get the ESENT "database stopped
the instance" and "database stopped" errors. Now, sometimes the
computer freezes and those Ghost / NProtectService messages don't
appear in the message logs... sometimes it's just the ESENT database
manager stopping out of nowhere. So I'm not sure if those events are
related to the crash.
Can anyone recommend a solution?

Thanks,
Robert

I can't help much other than to say that I have exactly the same
problem on one of my computers. The hang ups were about one a hour.

It started after I upgraded to updates V5 so I have switched the
upgrade service to manual to see what happens.

For the last 13 hours I have had no hang ups.

The ESENT Issue is happening to LOTS of folks. Just a "few," however, know
to look at the Event Viewer...... I, too, set up for Manual Updates. I
agree that these started with the download of V5. I still get several ESENT
messages, usually about 5 minutes apart, in sets of three but have not had
any lock ups as a result. I suspect (hope) that MS will issue an "Article"
on the Issue soon

I wonder is MS is reading these ???????

You know - I tried something similar to your approach earlier this
morning, but it didn't work - I removed the update service from the
task manager since it was running hourly. Didn't work for me... but my
solution, which has kept my computer up for six hours or so (crosses
fingers, knocks on wood) was to both uninstall Norton Systemworks
(which was running the GhostStartService command) and Windows SP2. A
sort of desperate try, but's been fine so far. I'm waiting for the
other shoe to drop.
If the computer is still working tomorrow, I'll reinstall SP2 and see
if the freezing issue continues. For now, I'm just happy to have a
working computer.

Thanks,
Robert

I promise, not FIVE minutes after I posted my last message, my
computer froze up again. After several hours of uptime. I've changed
the upgrade service to manual... let's see what happens now.

Thanks,

By the way - 24 hours later, my computer has not crashed once after
turning off the automatic update. I did turn it off overnight, but
it's been on for something like fourteen hours and no freezes. Thanks
very, very much!
So - anyone else whose computer is freezing up lately, check your
Events log for ESENT errors. Might want to try turning off automatic
Windows updates.

Anyone having this problem still? My computer is still freezing,
though not nearly as often - even after turning off automatic updates
in both Systems Properties and Administrative Tools / Services. And
uninstalling SP2.
It's this goddamned Task Manager Lite - that is ALWAYS what seems to
trigger the ESENT database shutdown.
I've disabled it completely through Administrative Tools / Services.
Anyone know anything about this service? From the newsgroups / google
searches, this is a relatively new Windows process...
