eSATA cable

I bought a eSATA cable trying to take advantage of the extra speed
with the interface. I can't never get the external drive recognized.
Even if I took enclosure off and push the connection all the way. (It
is rather loose when connecting from external drive). I've tried it on
both a laptop and desktop PC without a success. Does eSATA works
consistent for you? Maybe I just bought a bad cable?

Thanks,

You do realize that eSATA and SATA connectors are not compatible
at all?

Thanks,

Have you tried the same drive in an internal SATA connection?

Yes. I have tried both eSATA PCI card, as well as just a SATA-to-eSATA
bracket. I suggest you connect all cables BEFORE powering on the PC!

What eSATA enclosure are you using?

Thanks,

FWIW, it's been very reliable for me here -- worked the first time and
ever since.

I know about controller cards - I have one myself. But the OP never
mentioned a controller card. What laptops have an external eSATA port built in?

Asus' Z84Jp was apparently one of the first, Lenovo also apparently
offers handful with a eSATA combo port.

I'm sure there are others, but that seemed like enough time on this
particular issue to prove that they do exist.

You've tried it on a laptop?  What laptop has an external SATA or
eSATA port?
Asus G50Vt-X1 I bought almost 2 years ago.

Thank you all. I will tried th esuggestions people mentioned when I
got time. It seems there are people having similar problem after
searching on google.

I just purchased a Lacie drive with eSata cable. It worked right away,
but it stopped working that the disk just disappeared from desktop in
the middle of copying. eSata does not appear that stable!!

OTOH, I've moved many gigabytes to and from drives over eSata cables
without issue.
