Often programs I am running are aborted becaue of an
error of some kind.

I see a message supposedly explaining the problem but I
do not know what those messages mean, what to do about
it, how to prevent them from arising, etc.

*Is there a listing anywhere of all the possible- or at
least the more common error messages explaing what they
mean and how to cure and/or prevent the problem these
messages are displaying?

Go to control-panel,Adm.,event viewer,R.click the icon,
create a shortcut, then move to my documents. This way its
more accessable.Open event viewer,open a view,R.click
on the text line, properties.Usually writing down the
info works, but there is a button on top that saves the
info to notepad, then you could open and print it if its
important,it only saves the highlited line.As far fixes,
take the info to search in Help/Support in XP,knowlege-
base is the last listing for info.
