Errors when launching Outlook 2002

All of a sudden I get

"... \Outlook.pst is not a personal folders file."

when I launch from the taskbar, and

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime error!

Program: ...\OUTLOOK.EXE ..."

when I launch from start menu.

Outlook then respectively doesn't launch or terminates immediately after
launching. Either way I can't get to my to do list.

Please help.

Forgot to specify:

WinXPSP2+ and Outlook 2002

Also, it's hard to say what preceded the problem. Possible Windows was not
shut down normally and Outlook was open at the time.

That could damage a PST such that Outlook would report it's no longer a PST.

Thanks Brian, but how do I fix it? I hope I don't need to reinstall because
my Office XP is years old and I wouldn't know where the original installation
disks are.

The other thing I should mention is that I have Norton Internet Security
2006 running. I found some posts that suggests this software can cause the
runtime error. These posts suggest renaming a .dll file that NIS uses. I
tried this but I get refused access to the file, even when NIS is disabled.

Have now stopped the runtime error by renaming the .dll file in safe mode.

But I am still left with the .pst file problem. When I can manage to lauch
Outlook (curiously I can do this from the start menu but not the task bar) it
won't display the Outlook Today screen because it can't read the .pst file.

Any suggestions for repairing the file or replacing it with a .pst file I
can start again with?

You may have to purchase a commercial tool, if the Inbox Repair Tool
(SCANPST.EXE) won't work. There are several. DataNumen
(http://www.datanumen.com/), Stellar Info (http://www.stellarinfo.com/), and
OE-Mail Recovery (http://www.oemailrecovery.com/) all sell PST repair tools.
There are others as well and Google will find them for you.

I have the same problem and NOTHING works. I don't care about the lost info I
just want to be able to use 'Outlook' again. Deleted 'Office' and reinstalled
but get the same message!!
