According to the "How MS Word Uses Temp Files" document, when I save an open
document in MS Word XP (2002), the program is supposed to create a temp file,
delete the old file, and rename the temp file to the open file name.
However, every time I save an open file, it creates a new temp file that
doesn't get deleted until the original file is closed. If I work on a single
Word document all day long, it may create hundreds of temp files in my folder
(every time I ctrl+s), all of which get deleted only when the document
finally closes - so closing the file can take a very long time as the system
deletes all of the temp files before allowing me to do anything else.
How do I get the system to only create a single temp file that gets updated
each time I save? Why does the system not delete the old save files until the
document is closed? Is there some patch that will fix this obvious error in
the program?
