Error with Temporary Files

According to the "How MS Word Uses Temp Files" document, when I save an open
document in MS Word XP (2002), the program is supposed to create a temp file,
delete the old file, and rename the temp file to the open file name.
However, every time I save an open file, it creates a new temp file that
doesn't get deleted until the original file is closed. If I work on a single
Word document all day long, it may create hundreds of temp files in my folder
(every time I ctrl+s), all of which get deleted only when the document
finally closes - so closing the file can take a very long time as the system
deletes all of the temp files before allowing me to do anything else.
How do I get the system to only create a single temp file that gets updated
each time I save? Why does the system not delete the old save files until the
document is closed? Is there some patch that will fix this obvious error in
the program?

This behavior is undocumented AFAIK and not especially noticeable unless
you're displaying "All Files" in Word's Open and Save dialogs. If you have
plenty of RAM and HD space, this usually isn't an issue, but if Word starts
being sluggish, just close and reopen the document.
