Error with OE6 ONLY in XP PRO

Y

Yabbadoo

Have a brand new HDD XPPro, newly formatted, no software except Pro, SP2 and
all later updates, hardware drivers and AVG. It's a single HDD (not yet
installed as a second HDD).

Problem. OE6 - e_mail (send and receive) works fine. Newsgroups - can d/l
headers and bodies. What I can NOT do is post. The post goes to Outbox, but
gives error message on Send, remains in Outbox.

Called a friend with XPPro - he uses same ISP but a different news client.
He ran OE6 ISP ng's to try it out, got exactly the same result. We
concluded it was ISP news server problem. Today - same problem still
persists.
Switched HDD's (back to XPHome) - went to NG's - NO PROBLEM, it works fine.

Conclusion - the OE6 in XPPro must have a problem. I've tweaked all the
settings (am on cable) with no change.

What's different with XP Pro version OE6 to cause this error message in NG's
(port is 119)?

Sincerely, Len.

Could be something with the news feed you're using. Or a mistype in
username/password. Or invalid email address if they require a valid one.
One thing you could try is subscribing to the MS groups direct to see if
there's any difference.

Server: msnews.microsoft.com
No logon requirement. Standard port 119

OK. am subscribed to msnnews,microsft.com server.

Here's the first error on "Reply to Group" - pasted

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject 'Re: set', Account:
'news.cable.ntlworld.com', Server: 'news.cable.ntlworld.com', Protocol:
NNTP, Server Response: '441 Posting Failed ("From" Header not in Internet
Syntax.)', Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error Number:
0x800CCCA9

Sincerely Len.

Further 2 first reply incl pasted error - when I close the error screen, it
then gives a window saying "your message is being posted to the ng. It may
not appear immediately"

Can you make sense of what's going on. and why?

Sincerely, Len

This same thing was happening to me about 1am MST. However the posts did
eventually go out. There were five to ten minute delays.

Back to XPHome disk ... Colin, I'm positive it's something to do with XP-Pro
version of OE6, and not with MSN news server - either that or I've missed a
setting (but, which one?)
I only get these problems with XPPro (as does my friend) - and it doesn't
matter which news server - my own ISP, "news.cable.ntlworld.com" or
"msnews.microsoft.com".
Messages get out (with XPHome) with the usual delays till they appear, but
no error messages.
They get errors with XPPro - strangely, managed to get 3 out this p.m.
despite the error messages, but now it's stopped again - messages still
stiuck in the outbox.

There's another 2 things about XP Pro load - separate post.

Sincerely, Len.

Sharon - just occurred to me - could it be anything to do with Messenger? I
haven't turned it off (nor have I logged into it) and I don't want it. But -
can't turn it off, it says, 'cos it's in use.

I don't think Messenger has anything to do with it but to turn it off:
In Messenger, use Tools> Options> Preferences and uncheck "run Windows
Messenger when Windows starts." I also uncheck "Allow Windows Messenger to
run in background" even though it doesn't relate to autostart. I just like
to make sure it runs only when I tell it to.

Then in Outlook Express> Tools> Options> General: uncheck box to
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger." Also, go to View> Layout and
remove Contacts from being displayed in the program window.

Colin mentions seeing the same error and he's not using the same ISP as
you. I'm not getting it here. I have the same ISP as Colin but am in a
different geographical area so node and path coming into the servers is
probably different. I don't use Outlook Express (I do have SP2 and all
updates).

My guess is there is something going on between OE in XP/SP2 and the MS
servers. I would sit tight to see if it clears up. If it is an interaction
with the server and OE, I'm sure it will be fixed soon since that criteria
encompasses a large group of users.

OE6 is the same on Home and Pro. Anyway, I was just providing feedback on
what I saw on my end. Your mileage obvioulsy varies. Have you hovered the
pointer over the icon in the tray to see what the tooltip says?

You need to put in the "Servers Name" as: msnews.microsoft.com NOT
'news.cable.ntlworld.com'
Then set your connection to your internet connection as usual.

Len, you may want to post this over in the Outlook Express groups on this
same server.

PROBLEM SOLVED - (though it's given me a new one)
Thinking long and hard - the ONLY prog I put on this virgin HDD other than
XPPro and updates was .... AVG antu-virus!
Turned off AVG. . Lo and behold - "posting" is working correctly! Now all
I've got to figure out is WHY ... 'cos I've got AVG on the other HDD and it
works like a dream.
Also turned off Messenger ...

Thanks for your patience. Len.

You could try turning off the email protection only of AVG and see how that
goes. "Why" is certainly a mystery as this program usually works fine with
Windows and OE.
