Error while trying to repair xp installation

Dave

I have tried multiple times to repair my installation of
Windows XP Professional and get the following message:

The header bar reads: Unregmp2.exe entry point not found.

The screen box below the header reads: The procedure point
GetIUMS cannot be found in the dynamic link library
MSDART.DLL.

How can I get past this point without having to do a clean
install?

When the problem occurs, press Shift +F10 to bring up the
command prompt. Then type taskmgr.exe in the DOS window
and press Enter. The Task Manager should be started. If
not, try to press C+Shift+ESC. In the Task Manager
program, select the error messsage window in the
application list and click "End Task". In the process
list, terminate the unregmp2.exe program. Exit the DOS
prompt window and resume the installation process.

That error message is the result of the Repair Install
trying to overwrite the current Media Player 9 with the
default Media Player 8 on the XP CD. You could either
end task on unregmp2.exe as advised by Carey Frisch (MVP)
or simply keep clicking OK (maybe up to 60 times) to that
error message during the Repair Install, and then the Repair
Install will just continue on.

The real question is WHY you decided to run a Repair Install
in the first place. In my opinion that option should be one of the
very last troubleshooting steps to take when dealing with some
issue concerning XP. You will have removed all XP critical
updates and Service Pack 1 unless it is included on the XP CD
and therefore will be exposed to all of the threats that the critical
updates addressed including msblaster and sasser worms.
Hope you are behind a router or firewall before you connect
to the Internet again.
