I am trying to open a file my son saved on a floppy disk.
I keep getting this error message. What does it mean and
how do I get around it?

The document name of path is not valid. Try these
suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document of drive.
*Use the file open dialog box to locate the document.

Never try to open a document directly from a floppy. It frequently results
in a corrupt document (which might have happened already!); and in any case,
Word needs to create a temporary working copy of the document, which it
tries to put in the same location as the original -- on a floppy it quickly
runs out of space. Copy the file to your hard disk and try opening it there.

You might want to check if the file is Read-only

Locate the file in the "A:\" drive, then right-click it to bring up the shortcut menu, and click on "Properties" (it will be at the bottom of the drop-down list) go to the check boxes in the bottom-most section of the dialogue box and make sure the "Read-only" option is cleared and not checked

I hope that helps.

This will NOT address the issue of corrupt documents on a floppy drive.
The warning message is probably attributable to the dreadful Norton AV
office plug-in, but the essential premise is that opening and saving
documents to floppy discs is a recipe for document corruption. ALWAYS
open/save using the hard drive and copy to floppy.

I am having the same problem only from email. Even when
saved onto hard drive, the document will not open. The
error specific is: "Word experienced an error trying to
open the file. Try these suggestions....." which do not
work. If the file is copied from the original writter's
pc to a networked share, it can be opened. Any remedieis?

It's actually not the same problem, just the same symptoms. Some Word
documents get corrupted in transit when sent by email, seemingly as a
function of email and anti-virus setups. Best approach (that I've found) is
to Zip the file first, and send that.
