Error when loading file with linked MPEG files

I have been running Powerpoint 2000 for a long time without problem. I have a presentation that uses several MPEG video files. I can no longer load in any file that has an MPEG movie in it now. Presentations without MPEG files (but with AVI's) do load. Also, I can insert an AVI into a new presentation, but I can not insert an MPEG file. I keep getting the messag

"PowerPoint found an error it cannot correct. You should save your presentation, quit, and then restart PowerPoint.

every time I try working with the MPEG files. I removed Powerpoint and reloaded but it did not help. I checked my registry settings and they matched up with the samples I found.

I believe this started after I loaded the Sony Screenblast MovieStudio 3.0, so I guess I screwed up the codec, but I would have guessed that reloading Powerpoint would have helped. Any idea would be much appreciated
