error sending attachments

I'm having trouble sending attachments (through Outlook xp). I can receive them okay. I have Norton antivirus scanning my messages as they go out. The message moves from my outbox but gets 'stuck' at about 6% and eventually a message comes up saying "Norton Antivirus was unable to send your email message because the connection to your mail server was interupted". As a result I disabled Norton but the messages (with attachments) now remain in my outbox and don't get sent.
 
Refer to Can't delete message from outbox 5/06/04. I am having the same
problem. We may get an answer between us or together
