Error Problem

Amazing indeed, especially all the files in my MM folder are marked
2.1.4026.0, except for WMMFILT.DLL and WMMRES.DLL, which have no
version number at all listed. And to make matters even more
confusing, as soon as I re-installed IE7, MovieMaker (version
2.0.3312.0) crashed again. Got the "must close" error message. The
instruction list also shows how to manually register version 2.1. I
didn't do that; wasn't sure whether that was a continuation or an
alternative to the installation instructions.

Maybe Graham will have some more ideas.

Follow the manual install instructions, but only do the files which need
updating and if that doesn't work try it in safe mode.

I'm pretty sure I did that. My MM Folder has all the files that are shown
in Dean Rowe's instructions. All of the DLL files are version 2.1.4026.0.
But the MM Exe itself is version 2.03312.0 (obviously where the number is
coming from when I open MovieMaker). I tried to copy another version of
moviemk.exe from my i386 folder, but I cannot erase or rename the existing
one to replace it with the new one. If I delete it, another copy
automatically pops up. Same if I rename it. What drives the application?
The exe file or the dll files? Does it make that much difference? The only
other difference that I have is an additional subfolder in my MovieMaker
file called "1033". In it are additional WMM2RES and WMM2ERES dll files. I
deleted them and MovieMaker would not open; so I restored them and upgraded
them to 2.14026.0 as well.

you can usually copy the exe directly over the existing one.... it happens
quick enough that it's not refreshed from the backup folder.
