error on shutdown

Dan

Every time I shut down my computer, I get an error that says "net.exe failed
to initialize". I click "ok" and the message comes back 6 times before I
can finally shut down. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello Dan,

It appears that you may be infected with a virus.
Please run a thorough scan of your system with the latest virus definition
file for your anti virus program.

A search of anti virus sites for "net.exe" shows it could be a component of
a few different viruses.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Mike. But I use Norton Anti Virus and I'm on live update, so I
always have the latest and greatest, including the virus definitions that
were just released yesterday. I run a complete scan every Saturday night
at midnight, including last night, and it always comes up with no problems.
Any other ideas I might be able to check?

Dan

Hi Dan,

May not be a virus per se, but it may still be malware in the form of an ad
or garbage program.

1) Install and run Adaware from www.lavasoft.de

2) Install and run Spyware Blaster from
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

I reported a problem this morning entitled "error on shutdown" but now I
have additional info.

When I shut down the computer, I get the following message: "Net.exe
Application error - The application failed to initialize properly
(0xc0000142) Click OK to terminate the application".

As I described earlier, I would click ok 6 times before the message would
disappear. But as I was taking the time to write it down, it disappeared on
it's on after about 20 seconds.

I'm running Norton anti virus with the live update. My latest virus
definitions are dated 10/15/03, and I did a complete scan last night.

Hope this additional info makes a little more sense.

Be sure to follow Rick's recommendations, as well.

Aside from the previous excellent advice, do a search on your system for
"net.exe" to try and find what program is calling it. That will help
you to determine whether it is legitimate. Obviously it is refusing to
exit gracefully. The question is whether it should be running at all.
Please post back.

I have run virus checks using various virus software and nothing comes up.
I have also done a scan for net.exe. It was in the i386 directory. I
changed the name to dannet.exe, did a shut down and same thing happened.

Then I went to google and did a search on the error message, and found
several people complaining about the same thing in the Dell user group.
That's the only place I've seen the problem referred to, and coincidentally,
I also have a Dell, so it would seem this problem is peculiar to Dells. My
computer is only about 6 months old, and it's been happening ever since I
got it. Never had the problem on my old computer.

The posts in the Dell user group said it was a problem with directx, and to
install a later release of directx. I did that, but it still didn't fix
anything. One of the respondents in the user group said that fixed the
problem for him, but all the others said it did not. I've opened a case
ticket with Dell to see what they say.

Thanks to everybody for your help.

Dan
