I hope someone can help with this as I have the same problem, it appears that
my config and autoexec files are now in a folder called "repair"........so I
get the same error message as Gavin.

I have the same message and just posted a message on this
site. My error message appears at login. I thought it has
something to do with some software I downloaded but i
removed all the software and I am still getting this
message. Hope someone can shed some light on this problem.

I see a lot of folks getting this lately including me. We found the problem
using the Audit command. See if you have a folder called Windupdate not
Winupdate in your \program Files folder. If you do delete it! Go to your
registry and delete all references to Windupdate in it. Now expand from your
CD the Autoexec.nt file back into your \system32 folder. All should be good!
The file Windupdate.exe is deleting the Autoexec.net file in your system32
folder everytime you reboot. With the Windupdate.exe file gone so will be the
problem. I would like to find out what spyware program was creating this pest!
