Error mESSAGE

I have an error message isapnp.sys is corrupted, follow all the instructions
to repair by booting the system with XP got myself to c prompt. When I tried
to rename the file isapnp.sys to isapnp.old it kept saying that the file name
is not a directory. I have tried everything I could think of . I can see the
file in the directory. The instructions I used:
c:\ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys isapnp.old
if I can get to rename the file, I can then go and expand the file from CD
rom and copy the new file. Someone Please help if you can as I have run out
of all options except to reinstall the windows which I really do not want to
because I do not have all the backups

Is this the source of the instructions you are trying to implement?
You receive a "Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: Isapnp.sys" error message at startup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315311

I am not sure how you can see the file in the directory? Are you typing
the command at the C:> prompt or the C:\windows> prompt? The
instructions refer to the latter.

Hope this helps.

5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys isapnp.old
Note The steps in this article assume that you installed Windows XP to the
C: drive. The actual location of your Windows installation may vary.
6. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press
ENTER:
expand cd-romdrive:\i386\isapnp.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys
For example, type:
expand d:\i386\isapnp.sy_ c:\windows\system32\driver

however at the renaming point entry I encountered file name is not a
directory so I cannot get pass renaming the file. Please adv?

I got an error message isapnp.sys corrupted, try running repair. I inserted
the Xp CD boot up from CD and type R for repair to bring myself to repair
console. AT c prompt, (microsoft technical help site) I did the following:
c:ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys isapnp.old - trying to rename
the file so that I can copy the new file from the CD as per instructions

I used the XP CD to enter the Recovery Console by pressing R for repair and
using the correct admin password.
Got myself to c prompt where i tried to rename the file isapnp.sys to
isapnp.old so that can get the new file from CD as per instructions from
microsoft support site on resolving corrupt isapnp.sys
