error message

When I try to install Yahoo messenger or read a .pdf file I get an error
message saying "msvcp71.dll is a bad windows image please check against your
installation diskette" and clue to what is causing this behavior and is there
a remedy? thanks in advance

I should also mention I have ran sfc /scannow and everything was ok..i went
to a DLL download site to replace it their version was 288kb my DLL is 10.3mb
is it ok to replace with the smaller sized file?
