I recently uninstalled Outlook 2003 in favor of using Outlook in WinXP. No
when I try to start Outlook i ge the error message:

"Cannot start Outlook. Cannot disply the selected folder ot item. Could not
open the item. Try again."
In another news group it was recommended to check the "pst" file. I have
done a search and find not pst files.

Help would be gratefully accepted!!

PSTs are generally in hidden folders. Open Windows Explorer and type the
following into the address bar:

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

and click Go. You should see a folder containing your PST(s). If not, in
Windows Explorer, click Tools>Folder Options>View and select the "Show
hidden fIles and folders" radio button. Moreover, you can click
Start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Mail>Data Files and see where Outlook
thinks your PST should be.

That said, the first thing to try is to open Windows Explorer and enter this
into the address bar:

%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook

and click Go. Look for a file named outcmd.dat (the ".dat" may be hidden,
if you've elected to hide known file types in Folder Options>View). Rename
or delete that file and try to start Outlook again. If you still get the
same error, run the Inbox Repair Tool
(%CommonProgramFIles%\System\MSMAPI\1033\SCANPST.EXE for an English
installation of Outlook) on your PST to check it for errors.

If none of that works, create a new mail profile (Control Panel>User
Accounts>Mail>Show Profiles>Add) and point it at your existing PST to retain
your data.
