Error message on startup

Hello,
A friend of mine just starting getting this error message on start up:
"The procedure entry point ShCreate ThreadRef could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWATI.dll. ". None of the icons, or task bar
buttons appear once the computer starts up. The screensaver does appear.
Unfortunately, he did not have a chance to install the windows update that
was distributed a couple of days ago before this started happening. I had
him start up in safe mode to see if we could run virus scan but the same
problem occurs in safe mode - we cannot access any of the files or programs
in safemode. Any ideas on why this could be happening and how to fix it? He
is running the windows xp firewall, zonealarm and avg 6.0. He tells me he
did not install or uninstall anything recently (I know he wouldn't do that
without assistance).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wow!!
The exact same thing happened to me 2 days ago. Since then I have tried
renaming the .dll files as .old and restoring new ones from XP.. all to no
avail. I have no idea what the problem is. I really do not want to format my
hard drive. Anyone have any ideas?
