I am receiving Error E7D1001F: unable to write to file during scheduled backup
I have tried to contact Symantec and to this date have not received down to
earth answers that are understandable to me (a novice). Has anyone got the
answer for me on how to correct the error? Patty

Norton Ghost 9 is (was) based on a product called "Drive Image" from
PowerQuest. Symantec bought PowerQuest because it was easier to buy the
competition which, in my opinion had better products, then to impove what it
had. That being said, PowerQuest products were always VERY picky about the
state of the drive. Practically ANY error at all would cause the program to
fail. Sometimes these errors were reported pretty much from the get-go but
others would occur only after you had spent a considerable time executing
the program. Bottom line is that this error probably is an indication of a
disk error of some kind and running a chkdsk before attempting another
backup would probably take care of your problem.

Just an FYI though, If you pick up the latest issue of PC World there is an
article in there about a similar product called True Image from Acronis
Software www.acronis.com which beats out Ghost 10 in functionality. I use
the product and swear by it and with Acronis you will get first rate
personal attention to your concerns.

Even if you switch, I would still run a chkdsk on your system before trying
another backup.

Regards.

May have difficulty saving or restoring the partition if highly, sometimes
mildly fragmented as well.

I also was receiving error messages using Ghost to clone a drive, although I
have Ghost 2003. I never had trouble before until a few weeks ago. Norton
informed me that it was most likely caused by my disk being too fragmented.
They recommended I defragment my drive and, of course, they wanted me to buy
another of their products to do it with(no surprise, considering it's
Norton). I also told me that upgrading to Ghost 10.0 could not guarantee the
problem would go away. I used the Window defragmenter, to no avail.

I am getting ready to purchase Acronis True Image

GKW (and I think - Patty):
The Ghost 2003 version is bundled with the retail, boxed version of Ghost 9
(as well as the newer Ghost 10 version).

If you're interested in using Symantec's Norton Ghost disk imaging program
in order to directly create a disk-to-disk clone of your working HD to
another HD (either internal or external) so as to maintain on a routine
basis a near-failsafe backup system - then I strongly recommend using the
Ghost 2003 program in preference to the Ghost 9 or 10 versions. I've not
been particularly enthralled with either the Ghost 9 or 10 versions. I much
prefer the simplicity of use & effectiveness of its results of the Ghost
2003 program.

Using Ghost 2003 the process is simple, straightforward, reasonably quick,
and most of all - effective. While there's nothing wrong with the Acronis
True Image program for basic disk-to-disk cloning operations - indeed it's a
good program - since you already have Ghost 2003 why don't you give that
program a try?

In my own case, I employ the Ghost 2003 program using a Ghost bootable
floppy disk, and on occasion a Ghost bootable CD. The program works just
fine in a XP environment. While you can use the program from within the
Windows environment I prefer the simplicity and portability of the bootable
floppy disk or bootable CD. It's just a personal preference. Understand
there are no complex DOS-like commands that you need to use - as a matter of
fact not DOS commands at all. As I said the process is simple & effective.

If you're interested in receiving step-by-step instructions for using the
Ghost 2003 program, indicate such, and I'll post them.

Anna, would very much appreciate the step-by-step instructions for using
Ghost 2003 program. Thanks very much, Sam.
