whenever i install some programs i get an error message that states the the
installation failed, specifically that the remote procedure call failed.
this is not the rpc error due to the blaster worm- that is taken care of. --
this error only occurs during the installation of certain software. i have
checked the -->admin tools --> services and the rpc is started and is on
automatic startup. i am at a loss to figure this one out. thanks in
advance for your assistance.

Since you haven't told us what the "certain software" is, how can anyone
help you? Post back to this thread with information about:

1. What you have done to insure that your computer is 100% spyware and
virus-free.

2. Your computer specs - processor speed, RAM amount, if OEM what brand.

3. How the computer connects to the Internet. Is it dialup, cable, dsl?
Is this computer a standalone home user machine, in a workgroup or
domain?

4. What are the names of the programs you can't install? Include version
information. Are you installing from cd or from downloaded installer
executables?

5. Are you able to install any software using the same method (cd or
hard drive install)?

one piece of software is the Nokia PC Suite for my mobile phone, and another
was Merriam Webster Dictionary and there have been others including some
games but i forget what they were as it has been a while since i tried to
install them/
what happens is that the install seems to freeze but under the window is an
error message stating that the installation has failed because the remote
procedure call has failed.

OK, please refer to the other questions I asked you in my first post.
Add to that: what version of the operating system are you running? XP
Home or Pro? SP1 or SP2?

Walt, this is the third time I've asked you to answer all of the
questions I asked you, and you don't seem to be able to do that. I
asked you the questions to help troubleshoot the problem. Without more
information from you, I can't do this.

If you want help from this newsgroup, go here to get help in making a
good post:

http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Then come back with *full* details of your system as requested so
someone can help you.

Otherwise, it would be more efficacious for you to have a local
professional look at the machine. Someone on-site is going to be able
to diagnose the situation far faster than someone trying to pull
information out of you in a newsgroup.

Good luck,

Hello. I am having the same problem and came along this post and hoping you
could help me. I will supply you with answers to the list below as best as I
can.
1. I cannot assure that all the spyware is removed; for the most part, when
I was removing spyware is when I was beginning to notice problems with my
computer. I would follow the removal instructions to a "t" but it was causing
performance problems with my computer so now I am afraid to remove them. (I
have Norton) As for the virus information, I know I do not have any viruses.

2. Processor speed (I do not know but I do know there is somewhere on the
computer that you can find this, could you tell me where?) Same goes with RAM
amount, I'm not familiar with how to find out this info.

3. I am on a home computer and I connect by Comcast cable.

4. I cannot install a Lexmark All in One (printer, fax, and copier) It gives
me different error messages. The one that I am battling with right now is "An
error occured during the installation of this device." "The Remote Procedure
Call failed." I found many of these but the only one that I could get into
was set to "automatic" and running. I have had other error messages that I
will list at the end of this. I'm not sure of all the numbers of the version
but due to checking the version earlier I can tell you the version starts
with "3.11...." And I do have a CD to install the program.

5. I have not tried to install any other software and do not have anything
else to install to "test" this.

Other error messages I have received are:
Specified monitor is unknown. I think this was because I was being an idiot
and did not have printer on when I was trying to install...Is this correct?

Print Spooler had a problem too but I think I fixed this from another post.

I am just supplying you with all the error messages so you have something to
put "together." I am in desparate need of help to get this printer up and
running because I attend school online and need this printer. Class started
yesturday! Just my luck.

It is always better to make a new post rather than hijack someone else's
thread. Since the original question posted is no longer on my news
server, I don't know what it was.

It sounds like you are having more problems than just installing a
printer, however. If you are in a hurry, the best solution would be to
call a local professional to take a look at the computer on-site. I
can't guess what problems you had or caused by removing spyware since
you haven't said what they were or how you did it. If you've gotten
your computer into a tangle, it would be far wiser to have someone
knowledgeable untangle it for you rather than try and straighten things
out via newsgroup posts. I am not saying this to hurt your feelings or
put you off, but I think that would be the best course of action for
you as it sounds like your computer is in an unknown state right now.

If you feel you must solve the issues yourself, do a System Restore to
before you started working on things. Then go through the following
malware removal steps, doing everything with updated tools in Safe
Mode. Again, I don't think doing this is in your best interests, but
here's the information anyway and you can make that decision yourself.

First delete all Temporary and Temporary Internet Files. To do this, go
to Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab. You'll see where you can
delete cookies and files. For Temporary files, Start>Run cleanmgr
[enter] and then:

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2004)
antivirus using updated definitions.

Before you remove malware, get LSPFix or WinSockFix for XP - see links
below.

2) Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from Intermute. I would not
install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there are
CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at SilentRunners.

Be sure to update these programs before running, and it is a good idea
to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options).

If the malware remains even after you used Ad-aware and Spybot, you can
scan with HijackThis. HijackThis is an excellent tool to discover and
disable hijackers, but it requires expert skill. See below for
HijackThis links, including sites where you can post your HJT logs. A
combination of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the
About:Blank homepage hijacker. Again, this is an expert tool and
novices should get help with it.

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore after the system is clean because malware will be in the
Restore Points. With ME, you must disable System Restore completely.
With XP, you can delete all but the most recent (presumably clean)
System Restore point from the More Options section of Disk Cleanup
(Run>cleanmgr).

4) Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.

5) Run a firewall.
