error loading operating system.

I turned my computer on and got this message: file missing or corrupt:
windows\system32\config\system. I talked to Dell. The repair facility that
normally comes up when booting from the reinstallation CD didn't come up. At
one point I got a screen that wanted to reformat the drives. It recognized a
39MB partition as FAT but the main 114G partition was "unknown". I went into
recovery console and ran "map" and it recognized the drives. If I booted up
on a boot floppy and ran "dir" at the C:> prompt I got "an error occurred
during directory enumeration". I ran a partition recovery program called pr
and it recognized the two partitions plus an unpartitioned space. I scaned
all partitions and I was able to see files. When I exited, I saved the new
mbr configuration. Upon rebooting the system came up to a Dell diagnostic
program. I ran some tests - it gave an error on the CD although it works and
a bad block on the drive but upon rebooting I got this error - "error
loading operating system". I ran pr again and noticed that this time it
showed the fist partition as logical C and the second one as logical D. I
compared this to my Dell Win 2000 Pro machine at work. The first partition
is 39.1MB on both machines. At work the first partition is called logical A
and the second partition logical C. Is there any way to change the current
logical C to logical A and the current logical D to logical C? I booted on
the reinstallation CD again and pressed Enter at the setup menu (I also
tried 'r' but this took me directly into recovery console and didn't ask if
I wanted to repair) and it again took me to a screen that wanted to format
the drives and reinstall Windows. It still didn't recognize the big
partition as NTFS.

I also compared the first couple of rows of the NTFS partition on my home
and work machines. Work is not exactly like my home PC but close. Should it
be exactly the same? For instance, here is the first of each - work :
0000-0000 EB 52 90 4E 54 46 53 20 20 20 20 00 02 01 00 00. home - 0000-0000
EB 52 90 4E 54 46 52 20 20 20 20 00 02 08 00 00. The only difference is the
third to last pair. The second line 0000-00100 is exactly the same on both
machines and the third line is 4 pairs that are different. Does this mean
anything?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan D.

While the latter may be a DELL problem, see this text for help with
the error message: "How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry"
