Hello Experts,
I have Excel 97 Pro on Win98SE.

When I try to import a certain text file, I get the following error and
Excel closes:

What is the reason of this error?
I have been importing many simple text files in Excel and this Office member
has been handling all those very intelligently.

Thank you,

Do you get the same error when you try to import a copy of that file on a
different pc (with the same version of excel/windows)?

I'm guessing that it's not a problem with the file (just a guess!).

First thing I'd try is opening excel in safe mode
close excel
windows start button|Run
Excel /safe

And try importing the file.

If that works, maybe it's something that excel already has open--addins/toolbar
files. The first thing I'd do is rename my *.xlb file to *.xlbOLD. Use windows
start button|Find|files or folders and search for *.xlb to find it.

Then test it again. If it worked, dump your (now renamed) *.xlbOLD files and
rebuild your toolbar at your leisure.

If it still failed, then you could use some of the techniques that Chip Pearson
documents at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

If all that failed, then with xl97, I think I'd try reinstalling. (Newer
versions have a Detect and Repair option under the Help menu--doesn't help you
though.)

You may want to read this if you have to reinstall:
