I am trying to do a clean installation of XP from a CD
(full version) in a brand new SATA 160 Gb Harddisk.
Disk is properly attached, Mobo BIOS updated ...

I start windows installation booting from CD. I give go
through F6 to give the SATA drivers, so that HD is
recognised. Windows recognises the disk; I select to
create a single partition and then XP installation starts
formatting... till it crashes with a blue Screen message.

I tried to partition and install on a 30 and 40 Gb
partitions with the same result.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Hi,

What is the blue screen error message?

Did you follow your M/B instructions on how to set up the SATA H/D and have
you installed the M/B SATA drivers OK? I think most m/b's recognise these as
scsi devices.

Then you have to set up the array....

All this before you start any attempt at instaling.

I'm sure you have done all of this... but if not...

Several, depending on the size of the partition.
Basically binary stuff, nothing that gives you a clue of
what is going on.
I think to remember that in one ocasion, even crashed and
rebooted alone after ending format, without any indication.

Hi,

Are you sure that the bios supports a drive of this size?

Yes; I followed the instructions, installed succesfully
and boot POST shows it OK.
I can even read the HD Model number and capacity in the
RAID utility, but as I only have one HD, I do not have to
create any RAID set...
So I boot from CD, press F6 to install the drivers,
partition... so far so good... and after formating is
where the problem starts.
Any suggestions?

It is the latest model of Asus motherboard, A7N8X Deluxe
bought last week. I think I am pretty safe on that.
And HD is recognised by model and size in the RAID utility
configuration, ... altough I do not have to create a RAID
array as I only have one disk.

Hi,

Well, some things to check:

1) Loose cabling - always a possibility

2) Using the latest driver set for the board?

3) Possible bad drive - download a drive diagnostic from the drive maker and
run the diagnostics. Just because it's new doesn't mean it isn't bad.

Ah... I think you do have to create a RAID array even if you have only one
disk.

You cannot simply format 160GB with the original XP CD. You need a CD with
SP1 merged (slipstreamed). Only with such CD you can install on a 160 GB
disk.
