Error Deleting File or Folder

I've been reorganizing data files (collected over several
years)for the past couple weeks. During the past couple
weeks I've encountered this problem consistently as
follows:
Whenever I move, copy or delete files or sub-folders
within a directory, I cannot delete the parent directory
unless I log out of Windows XP, log back in, and delete
the directory before processing any other action within
that directory.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. I'm using Windows Explorer to
manage the files and directories. The files are under "My
Documents" in the profile I am logged in to. The files
are not shared out.
The error message is in a pop-up dialog box titled "Error
Deleting File or Folder" with an "OK" button in it. The
error I get reads; "Cannot delete (chosen directory): It
is being used by another person or program. Close any
programs that might be using the file and try again."
Any suggestions?

Thankyou for your suggestion. But, I'm looking for a fix
to the problem, not a work-around. Loging out and back in
is a work-around but doesn't fix the underlying problem.
Thanks anyway.

Go to START>RUN>type "CMD" ... in DOS type "cd my
document" and press enter. after that you type "del
[filename.end]". Try that

Kelly,
Please re-read the problem. I checked your link below.
This is not a permissions problem. I do not get
an "Access Denied" error. It is not an undeletable file.
It is a parent directory which cannot be deleted in the
current session after files or sub-directories contained
within it have been manipulated in some manner. I.E.:
copy, move or delete. Loging out and back in, re-opening
Windows Explorer, then allows the directory to be
deleted. Therefore it is not an undeletable file. I have
encountered such problems before and I could delete
the "undeletable file" in safe mode or using such methods
as you describe. But this is a different problem.

Thanks for your interest,
Tim

Hi Tim,

There are no fixes as of yet, only workarounds.

Kelly thanks. That's certainly less tedious than logging
off and back on. I'm still looking to find the permanent
solution. On another XP machine I use, with a copy of the
same files and directories, everything works as expected.
So I know there's still an anomaly to be corrected.

Fair enough, Tim. Might I suggest in lieu of logging off, end process on
Explore.exe.

Most welcome and yes there is a common glue out there as to why some suffer
from the behavior and others don't. I just haven't put my finger on it as
of yet. Good luck and keep us posted, Tim. :o)
