Error copying file - "Cannot create or replace" file or folder

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, version 5.1.2600. I've been trying to
backup MS Word files & folders in My Documents by sending them over to a
pendrive or copying and pasting them there, but the following error message
keeps showing up: "Error copying file or folder: Cannot create or replace
[name of file/folder]. The directory or file cannot be created." If I open
the Word document and try to save it on the pendrive, the error message
reads: "Microsoft Word - The directory or file cannot be created." In case it
matters, total capacity of my local disk is 18 GB, of which 13 GB is used.
I'd greatly appreciate if sb can help me out here.

Obvious questions
1. can you copy any other file types to and from the pen drive .
2. is the pen drive locked

Roberto, thanks for the follow-up. As to your questions:
1. I can copy files from the pendrive onto the hard disk . I cannot copy
files or folders onto the pendrive anymore, either Word files or others
(e.g., JPEG). At a first moment (first use of the new pendrive, after
unpacking) I managed to copy a number of Word files, but then the message
error started to show up.
2. I assume the pendrive is not locked, b/c it is recognized by the computer
as soon as I plug it and I've managed to move files from there to the hard
disk.

I must also add that the names of the refused files do not present special
characters (like accents and so on).

FYI My pen drives are recognised when they are inserted locked or
unlocked, but if locked no icon appears in Explorer [one assumes this is
universal behaviour].

Try it in another machine to rule out a defective drive, and/or reformat
it.
