On booting, when I get to the Compaq Red Logo ( 1ST screen) I get an error
message
"Error code 1782, Disk Controller" and the machine won't boot up. However,
other times the machine starts and works perfectly. In fact, I am on it right
now but I had to make a dozen or so attempts to run it. What will now happen
is in about two-three hours I will get a message that Windows is shutting the
machine down and that I should check new hardware or software added. Only
problem is , I haven't added any.The only unusual event lately is I dropped
the laptop but it continued to operate fine at the time with no breakage
apparent anywhere.
The Hard Drive self test checks out fine.
Can anyone give me any insight please?

Thanks so much.

I'm assuming that you tested the hard drive by booting with a diagnostic
utility from the drive mftr. and then doing a thorough test. Your
description of the problem indicates that the motherboard has been damaged,
probably the power supply but possibly other motherboard components also.
Since this is a laptop, contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support for
replacement. You can't fix this yourself.
