Error Code 10 - External Drive

I have an external USB 100 gig hard drive. When I used
the last set of updates from Windows I started
getting "error code 10 (will not start) on both
computers. Is my hard drive dead or is this something new
and fun from MS to keep thier customers entertained?
 
Have you tried doing a system restore to a time before the installation of
the updates to see if the drive works.
 
Yes. I tried system restore, uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers and voodoo. So far, nothing. But, I am very open to suggections
