Can you check the Windows Update log file and see if it has any additional
information? It is in C:\Windows (assuming that's where you installed Windows
to). Open it in Notepad and search for the error code then look at the
surrounding lines.

That error means some file is corrupted, but without knowing which it is
very hard to tell.

Hi Jesper thanks for the reply, had a look at the log, but doesn't make much
sense to me. Can i post a copy of the log?

Yes, of course. Don't post all of it though. Search for the error and post
that and about 10 lines on either side.

There are several errors in that file. In addition to the original one there
is also 0x80070643. That error is basically a generic "it didn't work." The
update it failed to install was Defender signatures. It is a general error
but I believe the most common cause is a network connection error.

Try this:

1. Click the Window button
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Windows Defender
4. Click the little down arrow next to the question mark and select "Check
for updates."

If that succeeds it should all be OK. I wish I had a better solution for
you, but I don't know what specifically caused that error so I think the best
course of action is to try again.

That still leaves you with the 0x80070714 error. It looks like it is update
ID 6C83D1C6-7C05-44C4-B70B-86AA0248AC59 that is causing it and failing, but
that does not tell me much. Have you tried running Windows Update again
since? Sometimes the errors resolve themselves.

If it is still a problem, please open Windows Update (Window button | All
Programs | Windows Update). Then click the Update history link. There should
be links for any failed installations.

I've recieved the same message ,I was wondering if you found a solution
because nothing else works?

I am getting this same error... with both of the error codes the same.

Same error as what? You changed the title of the thread, and didn't quote
any of the content to which you refer, so no one knows what you're taking
about. This is a Usenet newsgroup, not a chat room.

I'm also receiving error code 80070714 when trying to install a definition
update for windows defender. I tried going into defender and checking for
updates (like Jesper has advised), but I then get error code 80070643 like
the guy in the original email. If anyone has a solution, let me
know..........bloody vista!

I appear to have possibly discovered a solution......try this........

If you receive Windows Update error 80070643 while installing updates for
Microsoft Office 2003, you might need to restart the Office Source Engine
(OSE) service. Windows Update can automatically start the service to install
updates for Office products if the service is set to the default Manual
setting. If the service is disabled, you need to restart it, and then try to
install the latest updates for Office products again.

To restart the Office Source Engine (OSE) service
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

1. Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking
Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking
Administrative Tools.

2. Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator
password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3. If the Office Source Engine service is disabled (or not running),
double-click it to open the service properties.

4. Click the Startup type list, click Automatic (Delayed Start), and then
click Apply.

5. Under Service status, click Start.

6. Restart your machine.

7. Run Windows Update again (unless it's set to automatically install
updates).

Hope this helps.

on the first post, where the whole log is posted, it says after the error code "reboot required" Sometimes after you install one update, the computer requires a reboot, and won't install other updates until you do. Usually it reboots itself when it needs it, but not always. Did you try rebooting it?

On what first post? It's standard protocol to quote all or at least a
portion of the message to which you reply so there is some context.

why not do as you so often suggest, do a google search for the chain of events.
