I do not have permission to change drivers add software or auto update. I
didn't change any of the passwords.
I am not using this machine on a network and I am the only user. I am
listed only as a power user. I have tried to change my staus to admin with
no luck.

Log off and logon again as administrator. Only administrators have
permission to change user account rights and install hardware and drivers.
