Thank you kindly Rick. You hit the nail on the head! I
will try to follow the instructions carefully to learn
how to backup system and correct the situation without
damaging my registry.

Following instructions on the website, I noticed that it
instructs to remove Microsoft Plus for Windows XP. I
don't have that program installed. My OS is Windows XP
Pro and the program I'm using is Microsoft Office XP
Professional with Frontpage. The problem I'm confronting
is that when I try to use the tool "Detect and Repair" or
if I try to install a template from the CD, I get the
error message: This patch could not be opened... I used
to be able to perform these actions before. Should I
remove the damaged registry key and then try to reinstall
my OS from disk using the "upgrade option" in order to
preserve current information on computer? Please help!

Make sure you grab the appropriate one. Click on it and export a copy to the
desktop (where you can easily find it). Then delete JUST that subkey and
retry the detect and repair operation. If it is successful, you are all set.
If not, you can reimport that key by double-clicking it, so you are no worse
off than you were.
