Error 1606. Could not access network location.

David

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional and trying to
install a new printer but half way during installation I
keep getting "Error 1606. Could not access network
location <Common Administrative Tools>. AllUsers./" and
stops installation.

I even tried re-installing Win 2000 Pro but get the same
Error message during that installation. Does anyone know
what the problem is?

Thanks.

Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and create a Reg_Expand_Sz string named
"Common Administrative Tools"
and set it's value to read

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

restart for effect.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave but unfortunately it didn't
work. I'm still gettting the same error message. I checked
and the string is present. I'm using W2k (SP3) and due to
this error I can't seem to install a new program.

Any other suggestions out there? Any help would be on
this would be appreciated.

Thanks.
David

Try adding the Reg_Sz string value. Then since you already have the
Reg_Expand_Sz string in \User Shell Folders restarting the pc should
populate it with the correct value.

I'm not sure I can ever get this to work. I tried this
and re-started...Now upon trying to install new printer
the error message reads:

"Error 1606. Could not access network location %
ALLUSERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools"

The Common Administrative Tools folder is present in the
HKLM (on Local Machine) and HKCU (on Local Machine) with
the stated value as suggested.

Did I do something wrong? Is there anything else I can
try. Thanks again for all your help on this, it is much
appreciated.

Thanks.

It's present in both locations (Shell Folders and User
Shell Folders). However if I do a 'Find Key' for "Common
Administrative Tools" under 'View' it tells me "Registry
Editor cannot find the desired key."

Sorry about that. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be
answering. When going to the keys copied below, there are
are no columns labled 'data' and type'. All I see in both
locations below is..
"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative
Tools:"

Keys:
"Common Administrative Tools"
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Use
r Shell Folders

"Common Administrative Tools"
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\She
ll Folders

Am I not in the right place?

Thanks,
David

Then that may be the problem. run regedt32.exe and navigate to;

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
"Common Administrative Tools"
and make sure the type is REG_SZ
and using the string editor that the value is
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
(note: substitue your actual drive letter for 'C')

then navigate to;

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
"Common Administrative Tools"
and make sure the type is REG_EXPAND_SZ
and using the string editor that the value is
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

If you're not comfortable editing the registry then by all means don't. Get
someone to help you. Registry editing can be hazardous to the health of your
pc.
