On our network of 450 workstations we have Automatic
Updates disabled via group policy.

Now, when attempting to manually visit Windows Update,
the
error message r.e. 0x8DDD0018 appears to state that
Automatic Updates, Bits and Event Log services need to be
running.

We do not want automatic updates to be enabled on our
workstations.

This is a completely unacceptable and incredibly arrogant
requirement.

Short of implementing SMS, SUS or a 3rd-Party patching
solution, how may we get individual computers updated
**without** enabling automatic updates?

And I do not consider "temporarly" enabling automatic
update on individual workstations an acceptable solution.

Hi

Disabling "Automatic Updates" via group policy should not stop you
from being able to use Windows Update manually. What is important is
that you also not have disabled the Automatic Updates service in some
additional steps (the "Automatic Updates" GPO will *not* do this).

Even if the Automatic Updates service is enabled, the computer will
not do any automatic updating when you have disabled "Automatic
Updates" via group policy or Control Panel\Automatic Updates
=> "Turn off Automatic Updates."

So I guess you have disabled the service as well as you get the
0x8DDD0018 error. On the computer with the error, do the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Then find "Automatic Updates" in the list, and double click on it.

Change "Startup type" to Automatic if it is not, and press Apply.

Use the Start and Stop buttons to see if the service starts and
stops successfully. Leave it in a started state.

Do the same for the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service",
but here is Startup type Manual sufficient. The Startup type for the
Event Log service should be Automatic.

After this, try the Windows Update Web page again.

Anyway, with 450 computers, I would strongly advice you to look into
using SUS instead.
