error 0x80244001 when running windows update

When trying to run windows update i get the following
error: 0x80244001
My system is running Windows xp sp1a with all updates
except service pack 2.
Processor P-3 1-gig, 512 megs ram, Ati Radeon 9700 All-in-
wonder, Asus CUSl2-c motherboard.

This resolution applies to the V5 site BUT, may be applicable to
your issue, also.

Problem description

This error may occur if the MSXML3.dll is missing or not properly
registered.

Applicable operating systems

Windows XP
Windows Server 2003

Resolutions
1. Register MSXML3.dll
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Click OK. "

You could also : " Try upgrading your XML parser to the most recent
version, which is currently MSXML Parser 3.0 Service Pack 4 Release.
