Microsoft has now stated that they have a fix for this issue, however the
fix won't be available until the next revision of the UI piece of Windows
Defender--timeline unspecified.
Yeah. I just stopped the EXE; stopped the service; uninstalled; reinstalled;
and ran the initial Quick Scan. It ran fine.
I didn't reboot at all, but I did notice (even after running the uninstall
command for the Signature/Engine updates for Windows Defender) that when I
went back in to WD the signature file still showed as the one from yesterday
(i.e. 03/08/2006). Not sure where it picks that info up from but the program
didn't know I uninstalled the updates.
In any event, the good ole uninstall/reinstall seems to have worked.
