I am trying to create a back-up disc ( Backup and Restore) after running the
Format and Shadow Copy, it says Back Up failed due to Error 0-8004231F. What
does this mean? What do I do now? I was trying to back up on a DVD+R should
I be using a CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD+RW?

The specific reading is "A shadow copy could not be created for the
following reason: In sufficient storage avail to create a shadow copy
storage file or other shadow copy data. (0x8004231F).

I go to Back-Up and Restore. It asks me where I want to store these files.
My options are : Drive D (Recovery Data - it's full), Drive E (DVD-RW
Drive), or Drive J (removeable device). I selected Drive and inserted a
blank DVD-R disc. It then started to make a shadow copy, but it failed with
the above error. What am I doing wrong?

When I unclicked the Backup of Drive D, the Backup worked. Sure wish the
instructions were more clearly written so one could understand what is and
is not to be included. And...why doesn't this Error show up on Help and
Support KB? Well, anyway, I have a successful Backup now.

Thank you for the links, Rock. When I look under Computer there is nothing
anywhere that says Shadow Copy. Guess Vista changed that?

You're welcome.

Changed what? What do you mean look under Computer? I'm not sure what your
questions are directed towards, but there are quite a few references in
those Google searches about this issue.

One of the links tries to explain the error and how to correct it. It says
to go to My Computer (now Computer in Vista) and under Properties read about
Shadow Copies. Vista doesn't have such a thing. It only show the Drives.
Thanks again.

Ok, that info is not quite correct. I don't know what the source of that
is, but right click Computer | Properties | Advanced System Settings (in the
left pane) | System Protection Tab. On that page there is an info link "You
can also use restore points to restore previous versions of files called
shadow copies. How do I use previous versions? Clicking on the last
sentence takes you to the info page. Is that what you were looking for?

There were quite a few links in those searches.

Lol, I realized I gave you a longer means to get to the System Protection
tab. The shorter route is right click Computer | Properties | System
Protection in the left pane.
