Hi guys!
I recently purchased a Dell PC, using XP Pro. I configured the PC at the
office to join the domain. I would now like the new PC to serve as the ICS
"server" at home, by directly connecting to Internet (DSL).

Unfortunately, when I try to run Network Setup Wizard, I get an error
message stating I can't use it because the PC belongs to a domain.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

hi

Since at home you are using WinXP (as oppose to a central Server OS that is
used in the office) the network can not be configured as a Domain based
network.

You need to configure both computers as peer to peer network.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network
Settings, and Sharing. http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

This might help too: http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html

You're right, the wizard will refuse to run if the machine is in a Domain.

However, the wizard does not do anything you can't do manually.

Right-click on the connection you wish to share, and select properties.
Go to the Advanced tab.
You can enable ICS manually here.

DO be sure to disable ICS before going back into the office.
Don't have ICS enabled and sharing to a LAN connection which you then
connect to your work network, as the DHCP allocator may interfere with the
legitimate work DHCP servers. ( ICS *may* have enough intelligence to
detect the existence of another DHCP server and disable its DHCP allocator,
but I'm not 100% sure. )

Ron, thx for your insight. What I don't understand is that I did this before
on the older Dell (that was configured as the ICS host before I loaded my
domain profile) and it has worked fine.

I had hoped to do the same thing with the new Dell (that is more powerful),
but it was configured as a ICS client when I loaded my domain profile...

PS Ron, the LAN connection on the new Dell does not have an ICS sharing
option on the advanced tab!

You need to describe the setup you have where you want to run ICS.

How are you connected to the Internet? In detail, please.
How are you connected to the rest of the LAN which you wish to share to?
Again, in detail.
Details, details. Both hardware and software.

Is this machine XP original / SP1 or SP2?

ICS is for sharing one connection ( the Internet Connection ) to another
connection
( The LAN connection usually, or possibly a bridged LAN / wireless
connection. ).
So to enable ICS on a connection, the following needs to be true:

1) There needs to be more than one connection.
( The Internet connection to share FROM, and at
least one other eg LAN connection to share it TO. )

If there are multiple LAN connections to share TO, then you need to
either:
1.1) bridge them first and share to the bridge; or
1.2) choose a specific connection to share to.

There may be other conditions too..

So what connections ( in total ) are listed in Network Connecions folder
when you want to run ICS?

Hi Ron.
I currently run ICS on the old Dell under XP Pro SP2, the ADSL modem is
connected to USB and runs PPPoE. I have a 8-port LAN hub that the other PC's
connect to (all XP Pro SP2), through this PC(and through VPN when I log onto
the company network using VPN).

I bought a new Dell that I wanted to use as the new ICS server after loading
my domain profile at the office. When I tried to configure the new Dell to
act as the ICS server, XP Network Setup Wizard refuses to start, saying I
can't because I am in a domain...

Does this help?

Ron,

The current Dell is setup to connect through the DSL modem over PPPoE in the
USB port (running XP PRO SP2), under ICS. I have an 8-port LAN Hub connected
to the Ethernet port, which the other PC's connect into Internet through (all
running XP Pro SP2). I can also connect to my office domain using VPN.

I purchased a new Dell (PS2) that I wanted to use as an ICS server instead
of the old one, but after loading my domain profile and returning home with
it, XP Network Setup Wizard says it won't start because I am in a domain
(though I can connect no sweat to the Internet through the old Dell over the
LAN, as is!).

Does this info help?

So you need to install the USB modem and drivers on the new dell.
Then you will have 2 network connections:

The PPPoE connection, and the LAN connection.

Then look for the sharing option on the PPPoE connection, not the LAN
connection.
