Recently I'd posted about my CPU fan speeding up when I was pulling on
the system resources and I learnt it was a typical thing, yet I do feel
that my system is overworking somewhere...

I installed Speedfan which reads my three fans on startup as...

1716 RPM -- 47C
1308 RPM -- 29C
0RPM -- 9C

....then, for example, if I were to open up iTunes and play some music
for awhile the first fan jumps up to 56C and eventually 60C when it
speeds up to 5000 RPM to bring down the temp.

If this normal?? And would installing more memory help? Right now I
have 500Mb on a 2.67 GHZ system.

Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

Additional Memory won't help with reducing CPU load/temps.

1716 RPM is the CPU fan, 1308 RPM is probably an exhaust
fan. The 3rd is an unpopulated fan header or the sensor is not
connected on the motherboard.

As the CPU works harder, more transistors are switching and
generating more heat. It's normal under load for a CPU temp to
rise noticeably. There are all kinds of ratings for the different
CPU families ( Intel/AMD ) so without knowing which processor
and step you have it's hard to say what range or limit the CPU is
expected to work within. 47-C isn't unusual, my Core 2 Duo
at idle/quiescent is normally around 43-C.

One thing that is often overlooked is dirty/contaminated fans and
the Heatsink fins on CPUs. Another is insufficient/incorrect use of
Thermal paste on the CPU heatspreader to transfer heat to the
heatsink.

Hi pepplewick,
If it aint broke don't fix it would be my advise. All CPUs have thermal
cutout that will protect your system if it gets to hot. All that will
happen is you graphics card will stop getting data from the CPU and you
won't be able to use your mouse until you shut the thing down and let
it cool off. If you've had the system a while its good to check that
the heat sing over the CPU hasen't become clogged up with detritis,
blocking air flow over the heatsing vanes.

hope that helps.

Thanks for this. Have dusted inside, but will have another look at the
heatsink for clogs of dust and stuff.
