In Excel 2000 there is an "=" button at the top of the sheet next to the
cell entry field. If you click it, you get a box that keeps a running value
of the cell as you enter it. There's no such button on Excel XP. Is there
a functional equivalent?

You could modify your favorite toolbar.

Look for the equal sign and drag it to a nice location.

Not quite the same, but kind of close.

Ken, the equal sign has been combined with and replaced by the Insert
Function feature, formerly known as Paste Function. Note that "fx" has
replaced the equal sign. If you click "fx," the Insert Function dialog box
will appear. You can select a worksheet function and click OK, and the next
screen you will see is an input screen that is the functional equivalent of
the input screen that you remember from Excel 2000.
