Epson 4180 Smart Panel & Scan Speed

I'm using an Epson Perfection 4180 on a 3.0 MHz P4 machine with fully
updated Windows XP. Using the "Smart Panel" "Copy Center" to try copying a
simple B&W document at 150 dpi, it takes approximately 4 minutes from the
start of the prescan until it starts printing. During the scan, the scanner
alternates moving for about 4 seconds and stopping for 8. I can scan the
same document into Word or PS Elements in less than a minute and the scanner
moves continuously. I've installed all the latest scanner updates from
Epson. Is this characteristic of "Smart Panel" or have I missed a setting
somewhere? Other scans using "Smart Panel" seem similarly slow.

Are you scanning at at dpi higher than 300? If so (and it sounds like you
might since the scanner is having to pause), that could be slowing things
down and also probably really not providing you any benefit. You might
search the archives for this group. There have been some good suggestions
for free and low cost copier programs that might serve your needs better.

It could be the scanner is waiting on the printer.

A better software for quick copies is Irfanview. http://www.irfanview.com
Get Plug-ins!

Scan the document using the TWAIN interface in Irfanview, then print from
Irfanview. You don't even have to save the scan.
