Envelope and Label printing.

In Microsoft Office Word 2007, the printing of the Postal Barcode on
envelopes and labels is no longer available like on earlier versions of Word.
This barcode speeds up the mail considerably. I know, I work the USPS mail
sorting machine called the DBCS.

See "The POSTNET bar code that Word generates no longer qualifies for USPS
bulk mailing discounts" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=897290 for an
explanation of why Word no longer provides a way through the Envelope dialog
to add barcodes. You can still add them manually.

Interesting. Where I live bar codes are not used, and we get many queries
about the use of bar codes from the US. The currently perceived wisdom and
the reason why the bar code was removed is detailed in Suzanne's
contribution to this thread. It appears you are saying that the sorting
machines you work with do indeed recognise the bar code as previously
available and that this does expedite the mail? That being the case, the
omission may have been somewhat short-sighted.

In any case you can still add a bar code to your envelope/label using a bar
code field from Insert > Quickparts, or you could use the appropriate
envelope template that you can download from my web site.

Any more information you can impart about the use of bar codes would be
useful.

That of course assumes that the barcodes are correct. It is my
understanding that keeping up with USPS changes was something that Microsoft
found too difficult.

Hope this helps.

No, bar codes are still used; it's just that the bar code Word generates is
not the one currently in use.

That's what I thought - but the OP seemed to be implying otherwise based on
inside knowledge?
